“I am passionate about change. The change in landscape, in water level, in discharge rate… But also changes in GIS education and GIS tools. And I fly a drone for research purposes – how fun is that?”
Inia, or formally Justyna, is a research scholar from Poland (University of Wrocław) who was invited to perform part of the research under supervision of Prof. Helena Mitasova here at NC State’s MEAS. She is still enrolled in the University back in Poland, although on a daily basis, you can meet her at her desk in Jordan Hall rather than on the other side of the Ocean. She is working towards a Ph.D. entitled “Applicability of unmanned aerial vehicle for verifying the inundation model based on chosen hydrograph predictions”. Hydrological modelling (currently applying TOPMODEL) and spatial analysis are the main tools Inia is using in the research. She is trying to prove that data obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle aerial imagery, after geoprocessing, enables verification of inundation model accuracy comparing predictions with the real situation in the modeled area. If she achieves this goal, there is a chance for 2016 graduation!
